Block H, Sheffield
Block H in Sheffield presented a unique challenge in urban redevelopment, integrating a new-build internal structure while retaining the historic external façade. The project
demanded a sensitive and coordinated conservation approach to preserve the architectural character of the original building envelope, while accommodating the requirements of a modern development.
We were engaged as the specialist conservation contractor, tasked with delivering a
comprehensive programme of works to restore and stabilise the retained façade.
This included :
- Repointing using traditional lime mortars to ensure breathability and visual consistency with the existing masonry.
- Leadwork repairs and replacements, particularly to parapets, flashings, and cornice detailing, executed to a high heritage standard.
- Stone repairs to damaged or weathered ashlar and decorative elements.
- Stone indents carefully matched and tooled to integrate seamlessly with the existing fabric.
- Structural alterations to accommodate new load paths and interfaces between old and new structures.
- DOFF cleaning, a gentle, non-abrasive technique, was employed to remove decades of surface grime without damaging the substrate.
- Stone supply, including the sourcing of matching replacement stone from approved quarries.
- Brick replacements where units were fractured or unsalvageable, with close attention to bonding and colour matching.
- Graffiti removal using specialist conservation approved methods to protect the stone’s surface.
Project Challenges
The works were meticulously programmed around the ongoing construction of the new internal building structure. This required close coordination with the main contractor and project management team to ensure access, safety, and minimal disruption to concurrent activities. Our team worked flexibly to sequence operations around scaffolding adjustments, structural tie-ins, and phased building elements. Particular care was taken to preserve the structural integrity of the façade throughout, while integrating new structural steelwork behind it. The project successfully preserved the historic character of Block H’s façade, blending heritage with modern construction. Our conservation expertise ensured that the restored elevation remains both structurally sound and visually coherent with its original appearance, contributing to the architectural continuity of Sheffield’s urban fabric.
