Block A, Sheffield

We were trusted with the specialist conservation and restoration works to the historic Block A in Sheffield. The project involved the retention of the original external façade, with the construction of a new hotel built behind it. This required careful planning, precise execution, and close coordination with other trades on site.

Our package included a range of traditional and technical stone and façade works, completed to high conservation standards:

  • Repointing of existing masonry using appropriate lime mortars to match the original character.
  • Formation of structural openings to facilitate new access points and service routes.
  • DOFF cleaning to gently remove built-up contaminants from the stone surfaces without causing damage.
  • Stone repairs, including indents and replacements, carried out with close attention to detail and material matching.
  • Leadworks, including new flashings and weathering details to protect restored elements.
  • Construction of a new stone-clad frontage, blending traditional craftsmanship with the requirements of a modern hotel design.

Our works were carefully programmed around critical site activities, particularly the installation of new windows and the restoration of the original cast iron balconies. These elements were integral to the retained façade and required close collaboration with other subcontractors to ensure successful integration without compromising the heritage features.

This project exemplified the balance between conservation and contemporary development. Our contribution ensured that the historical façade of Block A remains a key part of Sheffield’s streetscape, while supporting the creation of a new, fully operational hotel behind it. Our team’s attention to detail and flexible programming were key to the successful delivery of this complex and rewarding project.
