St Joseph’s Church, Leeds

St Joseph’s Church in Leeds, a cherished place of worship and architectural heritage, commissioned us to carry out a sensitive reconfiguration of the altar sanctuary and associated liturgical furnishings. The brief required both aesthetic enhancement and practical reordering to reflect the liturgical needs of the parish while respecting the church’s historic character.

Scope of Works

Our team was tasked with the following:

Removal of Existing Finishes:

We carefully stripped away the existing floor finishes, including worn carpets, ceramic tiles, and the original timber steps, to prepare for a cohesive new sanctuary layout.

Installation of Natural Stone Steps:

To elevate the altar area with a timeless, durable finish, we installed a new set of natural stone steps. The stone was chosen to complement the church’s existing interior palette while enhancing visual prominence and accessibility of the sanctuary.

Reconfiguration of the Entablature Area:

The entablature, which frames the sanctuary space, was reconfigured to suit the new layout and liturgical requirements. This involved minor structural adaptation, ensuring architectural harmony and compliance with ecclesiastical standards.

Installation of New Tabernacle:

A new tabernacle was installed in a central and dignified position, allowing it to serve as the spiritual focal point of the altar area. The installation was carried out with great care to ensure liturgical appropriateness and visual integrity.

Challenges & Solutions

Maintaining Liturgical Functionality:

All works were carried out in close consultation with the parish and liturgical advisors to ensure alignment with sacred design principles and the Roman Catholic liturgical guidelines.

Preserving Heritage Elements:

As the church is of historic value, all interventions were undertaken with sensitivity, ensuring minimal disruption to existing architectural features.

Outcome

The completed works have greatly enhanced the visual and spiritual focus of the sanctuary. The use of high-quality natural materials and considered layout changes have brought renewed dignity and functionality to the altar space. Parishioners and clergy alike have praised the transformation, noting its respectful blending of tradition and contemporary craftsmanship.
